Trans-what? There’s only been one…
Today our world celebrates the bravery of trans-genders; as men claim to identify themselves as women, and women claim to identify themselves as men. We as a culture are a little slower (and I’m not sure why) to accept this new issue of trans-racial; as a white woman claims to identify herself as an African-American woman.
It seems to me that our country is suffering from a severe identity crisis! Nobody really knows who they are any longer. But then again how could they? Our identity is found in God. It is Him who created us, and it is in Him that we have our being. Everything we are is in Him.
The disciples experienced this incredible phenomena, as they saw Him finally for who He was! The bible tells us that Jesus led Peter John and James up a mountain, and there he showed them who He really was. You see they knew he was different, they knew he was more than just a carpenter’s son. And they were right. Jesus wasn’t just a man, he was God. He looked like a man, but he was merely the “expressed image of His person”. He looked like you and I but “in Him dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
Paul would look at him in retrospect and say, “Great is the mystery of godliness, God was manifest in the flesh…” It wasn’t a difficult proposition, after all the beloved John tried to tell us in John 1:1, 14, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God….” vs 14 “…and the word became flesh and dwelt among us…” Jesus himself told Phillip, “if you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the father.”
This day; as Peter, John and James are with Jesus on this mountain something incredible happens. Suddenly Jesus began to change… he shown bright like the sun… Moses and Elijah appeared, the law and the prophets bearing witness that this is who they had prophesied about! This moment sits alone in the corridors of human history because this is the only true case of a a man who was born as something else! We call this moment the trans-figuration. When what He appeared gave way to what He was! When who He looked like gave way to who He really was!
One day we too will see him as He is… 1 John 3:2, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
When He see Him, we see us! My identity is to be like Him! God trans-figured has the power to trans-form my world!
